Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose inner pulp has become infected or died. Instead of extracting the tooth, the infected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is restored. It is the difference between keeping your own tooth and having a gap.

What root canal treatment involves

The aim is to remove infection completely and seal the space so bacteria cannot return. Depending on the tooth, this takes one or two visits.

  • Diagnosis. An examination, usually with an X-ray, confirms the pulp is affected and shows the shape of the roots.
  • Cleaning. Under local anaesthetic, a small opening is made and the infected pulp is removed from each canal.
  • Sealing. The cleaned canals are filled with a sealing material to prevent reinfection.
  • Restoration. The tooth is rebuilt, usually with a crown, because a treated back tooth becomes brittle and can fracture without one.

Modern root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic and most patients find it comparable to having a filling. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the infection beforehand, which the treatment relieves.
How many visits does an RCT take?
Front teeth with a single canal can often be completed in one visit. Back teeth with several canals usually take two.
Do I really need a crown afterwards?
For back teeth, almost always. A root-treated tooth loses its blood supply and becomes brittle, and a crown protects it from splitting. Skipping it is the most common reason a treated tooth is later lost.
Can the tooth get infected again?
It is uncommon when the canals have been cleaned and sealed properly and the tooth is restored promptly, but it can happen. Regular checkups catch any problem early.
