What is Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket. It is recommended only when a tooth cannot be saved by other treatments, or to relieve crowding or infection.
Why is it needed?
Extraction may be needed for severe decay, advanced gum disease, a badly broken tooth, or to make space for orthodontic treatment.
Symptoms & signs
- Severe, unmanageable tooth pain
- A badly broken or decayed tooth
- Loose teeth from advanced gum disease
- Infection that cannot be resolved by other means
Common causes
- Extensive, non-restorable decay
- Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
- Dental trauma
- Crowding requiring space
The procedure, step by step
- Assessment & X-ray. The dentist confirms extraction is the best option and reviews the tooth position.
- Numbing. Local anaesthetic ensures the area is fully numb and comfortable.
- Removal. The tooth is gently loosened and removed. Stitches are placed if needed.
- Aftercare guidance. You receive clear instructions to support healing and manage discomfort.
Usually a single visit; a follow-up may be arranged if stitches or a replacement is planned.
A blood clot forms in the socket and initial healing takes about 1โ2 weeks. Some tenderness and swelling for a few days is normal.
Benefits
- Relieves pain from a non-restorable tooth
- Removes a source of infection
- Creates space where needed for alignment
Possible risks
- Bleeding, swelling, or discomfort after the procedure
- Dry socket if aftercare is not followed
- Infection (uncommon with good aftercare)
- A gap that may later need replacing
Alternatives
- Root canal treatment (if the tooth can be saved)
- Crown or filling for restorable damage
Aftercare
- Bite gently on gauze as instructed to control bleeding
- Avoid rinsing vigorously, smoking, or straws for the first 24 hours
- Eat soft foods and keep the area clean
- Contact the clinic if pain worsens after a few days
When to visit a dentist
See a dentist urgently for severe pain, swelling, or a broken tooth. Whenever possible, the dentist will try to save the tooth before considering extraction.
