Scaling removes the hardened plaque, called tartar or calculus, that builds up on teeth and cannot be brushed away. Polishing then smooths the surfaces so plaque takes longer to return. It is the single most effective appointment for protecting your gums.
What scaling and polishing involves
The appointment is straightforward and usually takes thirty to forty-five minutes.
- Examination. Gums are checked for bleeding, recession and pockets around the teeth.
- Scaling. Tartar is removed from above and just below the gum line, including between the teeth where brushing misses.
- Polishing. Surfaces are polished to remove staining and leave the teeth smooth.
- Advice. You are shown the specific areas you are missing at home, which matters more than any product.

Does scaling damage or loosen teeth?
No. This is a common worry but scaling removes deposits, not tooth. Teeth can feel slightly loose or sensitive briefly afterwards because tartar that was splinting them has gone and inflamed gums are settling.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease, smoke, or build tartar quickly, your dentist may suggest every three to four months.
Will scaling whiten my teeth?
It removes surface staining, so teeth often look noticeably brighter, but it does not change the natural colour of the tooth. Whitening is a separate treatment.
Is scaling painful?
Usually not. If your gums are inflamed or you have sensitivity, the area can be numbed for comfort.
