Orthodontic treatment moves teeth into a better position over time. It is not only about appearance: crowded and misaligned teeth are harder to clean, wear unevenly, and can put strain on the jaw joint. Treatment typically runs from several months to a couple of years depending on the case.
What braces and orthodontics involves
Braces apply gentle continuous pressure so teeth move gradually through the bone. Regular adjustment visits keep the process on track.
- Consultation. Your teeth, bite and jaw are assessed and the realistic result is discussed, along with how long it will take.
- Fitting. Brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected with a wire. This is not painful, though teeth feel tender for a few days afterwards.
- Adjustments. You return every few weeks so the wire can be adjusted as the teeth move.
- Retention. Once the braces come off, a retainer holds the teeth in their new position. Teeth drift back without one.
Who it suits
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between the teeth
- Front teeth that stick out or do not meet properly
- A bite that feels uneven when chewing
- Children and teenagers whose adult teeth are coming through crooked
Good cleaning matters more than usual during orthodontic treatment. Plaque collects around brackets and can leave permanent white marks on the enamel, so brushing carefully is part of the treatment, not optional.
