A filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay. The decayed part is removed and the space is rebuilt with a material that restores the shape and strength of the tooth. Treated early, a cavity is a short appointment. Left alone, the same tooth often ends up needing root canal treatment.
What dental fillings involves
Most fillings are completed in a single visit.
- Numbing. Local anaesthetic is used where needed, so the procedure is comfortable.
- Removing decay. The softened, decayed tooth structure is cleared away completely.
- Filling. Tooth-coloured composite is placed in layers and hardened, or another suitable material is used depending on the tooth.
- Shaping. The filling is shaped and polished so your bite feels normal.
Who it suits
- A visible hole, dark spot or rough edge in a tooth
- Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold
- Food consistently packing into one spot
- An old filling that has chipped, worn down or fallen out
Early decay often causes no symptoms at all. By the time a tooth hurts, the problem is usually well advanced, which is the argument for routine checkups rather than waiting for pain.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a filling last?
A well-placed composite filling commonly lasts five to ten years or more. Lifespan depends on the size of the filling, your bite, and how well the area is cleaned.
Will the filling match my tooth?
Tooth-coloured composite is shade-matched to your tooth and is not obvious when you speak or smile.
Can a cavity heal without a filling?
No. Once decay has broken through the enamel it does not reverse. Very early demineralisation, before a hole forms, can sometimes be halted with fluoride and better cleaning.
Does getting a filling hurt?
With local anaesthetic you should feel pressure but not pain. Small, shallow fillings can often be done without any injection at all.
